  • About me
I am originally from Southern California and have been creating art all my life. I started drawing at the age of three and started painting a few years later. I was introduced to cubism at the age of 13 when I attended a Picasso exhibit at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). I went home that day and painted my first cubist painting. I've studied and admired the works of artists Picasso, van Gogh, Monet, Wyeth, Vermeer, Rembrandt, Renoir, Jongkind, and many more. My inspiration comes from art history, from the beauty of our planet, from people who have had an impact on my life and those who have made a difference in the world. I enjoy challenging myself and exploring new paths in creating art. Art should be limitless. I hope to continue on my creative journey into the new and unknown.

  • About the Artist
Robert Lyn Nelson, one of the premier American artists of the late 20th and early 21st centuries, was born February 1, 1955 in Upland, CA. His remarkable talent was evident by the age of three, when he began drawing with charcoal and pencil. By the time he was seven years of age, he painted and drew every day, creating an impressive collection of art, astonishing everyone who saw his work.

Nelson moved to Hawaii in 1973 where the beauty of the islands and his newfound interest in Hawaiian history brought exciting new artistic inspiration. An encounter with a humpback whale led him to paint, “Two Worlds”, Nelson’s notable masterpiece that launched an artistic genre, The Modern Marine Art Movement. Nelson is known as the pioneer of the “Two Worlds” concept of marine art, depicting life both above and below the surface of the ocean.

With a formal education in abstract painting followed by a lifetime of observation and experimentation, Nelson has expressed himself in abstract form on canvas for many years. His dynamic new nonrepresentational abstract series is refined, polished, and sublime and has drawn quite a following.

He had studied the art of Picasso and cubism throughout his childhood years, but it was his first visit to the LA County Museum of art at age 13 that inspired Nelson to explore this new way of visualizing the world. Cubism has since then been one of his favorite styles because it challenges him to expand his creative process beyond what most see as reality.

Although known for his extremely detailed realistic creations, Nelson’s work also includes other many styles including cubism, surrealism, impressionism and more. Nelson’s work continues to evolve, as he finds new fields to explore, sharing new inspirations like a poet with a sable paintbrush. Although he has been studying, observing, creating art for years, he sees every day as an opportunity to express himself in different ways, to branch out into new ways of seeing and using his paint brush to give the world a visual of that view.
